In an interview with Senator Bam Aquino on Thursday, he said that in order for the price of internet service to go down, there needs to be at least four or vide internet providers.
He says that this is because competition will allow the providers to drive down their prices and up the quality of their service. Currently PLDT and Globe Telecom are the major networks in the industry.
“What we want to see is not just one more telco player. We need at least four or five,” said Aquino.
"The more, the merrier. The more competitors you have, the lower the prices will be, the higher the quality is," he added.
China has recently shown interest in investing via China Telecom, via the invitation of President Rodrigo Duterte.
It is said that President Duterte wanted that the new telco players be operated int he first quarter of 2018. However, Trade Secretary on Lopez said that most likely it will take over six months to one year before it happens.
The want for new telco players is something that Aquino agrees with. He says that the Philippines should be open to other countries joining in, like Australia and Japan, as well as South Korea.
"Tama tong paghikayat ng player sa ibang bansa [It's right to invite a player from another country], but I don't think we should be satisfied with just one," he said.
"Even if you invite them, pagdating nila dito [when they arrive], they still need 50 signatures just to get anything done, two years before they can import any of their equipment into the Philippines," said Aquino.
"All of this lack of ease of doing business will stop them from operating right away," he added.
Aquino is the one who authored the Open Access in Data Transmission Act of 2016, of the Senate Bill 171.
The bill is intended to provide additional powers to the National Telecommunications Commission and encourage healthy competition amongst players in order to better their service to the Filipino people.
The Philippines has one of the slowest internet connections in the world. This is ironic because the country is one of the most active in social media sites.
