President Rodrigo Duterte was invited by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to join the 10-member bloc at the ASEAN-Australia commemorative summit to mark the 14th anniversary of the Australia's ties in Sydney on March 16-18.

PhilStar report, the formal invitation was transmitted by Department of Foreign Affairs Australian Ambassador Amanda Gorely the other night to Duterte at Malacañang.

Philippine Statistics Authority says with some 2.4m Filipinos working abroad, Australia with its opportunities, lively cities and amazing landscapes, is a top destination for Filipinos seeking new horizons.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2017, about 10% of OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) have headed to Australia, and that number has been growing.

Australia is one of the major dialogue partners of the ASEAN and ARF.

Australian Ambassador Gorley said that the invitation was signed by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull who was in Manila last November.

During the 50th ASEAN founding anniversary and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), the Prime Minister attended upon the invitation of Duterte.

We hope to see all the ASEAN leaders, including President Duterte to attend the ASEAN-Australia commemorative summit to discuss common concerns on regional security and terrorism and continuing cooperation on economic and trade relations," Gorley said.

Since a large Filipino community in Australia is fast rising, the ambassador noted that this will surely be an important part of the visit of the Philippine president.

Gorley led the celebration of Australia's National Day last Thursday night at the Makati Shangri-La where Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea represented Duterte while the president is in New Delhi to attend the India-ASEAN commemorative summit.

According to Medialdea, "Australia has been very helpful to the Philippines, that's why I am here to represent President Duterte to show our deep appreciation to the Australian government and people."

Gorley also recalled when Turnbull visited

Manila, Armed Forces chief of Staff Gen. Leonardo Guerrero told the Prime Minister how Australian military aircraft helped the Philippine Army to have a real-time intelligence during the Marawi siege last year.

"With the outbreak of the devastating Marawi siege, the Australian government immediately offered its support to the Philippine government, recognizing the threat of ISIS gaining foothold in our region," Gorley said.

The assistance, as told by Guerrero to the Prime Minister, was "game-changing" in the fight against the terrorist groups, she added.

The ambassador also expressed her sadness with the continuing explosive episodes of the Mt. Mayon in Albay, where thousand of families have been displaced.

Gorley stresses out that they have provided as always humanitarian assistance because Australia is a good friend of the Philippines. She also added that they will pledge to the Philippine Red Cross Php31.6 million worth of humanitarian support for the Mayon evacuees on top of the 6,000 non-food items for the affected families.

In her National day message, Gorley look forward in seeing Duterte in the ASEAN-Australia Leader's Summit in Sydney in March. This is a first time in Australia, if ever.

"As I approach my third Australia Day in the Philippines, our relationship has gone from strength to strength, culminating in the visit of Prime Minister Turnbull in November," Gorley added.

In her brief remarks, Gorley expressed gratitude to the well-wishers who attended Australia's National Day and announced the forthcoming 2nd Philippine-Australia Friendship Day which will be celebrated this year in Davao City, Duterte's hometown.

But did you know that Filipinos have been living and working in Australia for nearly 150 years?
