The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on Friday condemned the surprise attack orchestrated by the Philippine Military against the NPA terrorists on Thursday, a CHR top official said.

The attack, which resulted to the death of at least 21 bandits, was considered by the government as the most successful military operation against the terrorist group under the Duterte administration.

On May 4, police also killed NPA member Roberto Dulango in Bohol while in police custody. The commission also criticized the killing of Dulango seeking investigation.

The official, who didn’t want to reveal his identity because he was not authorized to speak, told a local paper on Friday, that the military should have let the rebels finish their meals before they conducted the airstrike.

As reported earlier, the bandits were surprised by the military attack, leaving their foods and other important belongings and letting their camp taken over by the military.

The official called the operation “a blatant violation of human rights”.

“Although they are a lose group, they are also subject for due process. The military should have given them warnings to minimize unwanted deaths”, the CHR official said.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) did not give a response on the alleged criticisms.

President Rodrigo Duterte has promised to totally destroy the terrorist group following a series of ambush operations in previous months.
