Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II confirmed that a former senator and an incumbent congressman from Laguna, both from the Liberal Party (LP), offered a Php 100 million bribe through a mobile phone call to high-profile inmates.

The inmates were offered to be paid so that they will retract their testimony against Senator Leila de Lima who is to be arrested today. The goal of the offer was to make it appear as though the  senator is a victim of false accusations, which the LP construes as a tactic to win the sympathy of the Filipinos in time for EDSA People Power celebration on February 25, 2017 (Saturday).

The bribe, along with their freedom, was offered to the inmates on February 22, 2017 (Wednesday) through a mobile phone call. It was followed up earlier this morning through former police officer and convicted kidnapper Clarence Dongail which the inmates rejected again.

“They (LP) wanted to use this to attract more people for the EDSA anniversary and do another people power,” Aguirre said adding that the plot is “well funded and evidently without scruples.”

The matter will be investigated and a complaint will be possible raised.

“This is tampering of the highest order! We are taking the matter very seriously and we will go after those who are responsible. We are going to bring a complaint against them because that is illegal, immoral,” Aguirre said.
