Korina Sanchez, ABS-CBN news anchor and the wife of former Senator Mar Roxas, said in her column in Bulgar that the term “fake news” was never became a part of political terminologies only when President Rodrigo Duterte took over in 2016.
(‘Fake news proliferated only in this administration. This was not an existing term ever since. It is because people nowadays spread fake news to make the critics of the current administration look bad to the public)” Sanchez said.
She also added that in the history of the Senate hearings in the Philippines, this is the first time to hold public hearings regarding the spreading of fake news to protect the government officials. She also reiterated Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque that fake news was necessary to know what is true news.
Ganu’n ba ang pangangatwiran ni Roque?(It’s like if there are no criminals, we won’t know who are not criminals. If there are no illegal drugs, we won’t know what are the legal drugs. Goodness won’t exist if there is no evilness. Is this Roque’s justification?)” said Sanchez.
According to Roque, it is up to the people on how they filter the news to know which is true and not. If that’t the case, all the broadcasters and journalists in the Philippines can spread fake and real news..” she added.
