“Treated like an animal”’ Bonita Baran shows the injuries she suffered from years of maltreatment by Reynold and Analiza Marzan whom she worked for as a housemaid. Baran, who lost most of her vision, has sued the couple for attempted murder, physical injuries and serious illegal detention.

After five years of legal battle, Bonita Baran the helper who was left blind after being abused by her employers has finally attained justice.

Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) chief Persida Acosta confirmed that the Quezon City court handling the case found Baran’s employer Annaliza Marzan guilty of serious illegal detention.

Acosta, whose office provided legal assistance to Baran, said Regional Trial Court Branch 77 Judge Ferdinand Baylon sentenced Marzan to serve up to 40 years in prison.

Marzan’s husband, Reynold, was sentenced to serve up to 20 years in prison for conspiracy to commit the crime, Acosta said. Reynold was earlier allowed by the court to post bail.

The case became controversial five years ago because of the maltreatment that Baran received from her employers. She was only 17 years old when she started working for the couple at Quezon City in 2007. She experienced hell for five agonizing years, burned with flat iron, whacked by figurine dumbbells, pierced by scissors, forced to eat cockroaches, and the worst is both of her eyes were pierced; causing blindness.

The suspects gave themselves to authorities that time, and were even invited at the Senate for a hearing, where they insisted that all of the injuries were self-inflicted by  Baran.

Based from PAO (Public Attorney’s Office) Forensic Laboratory, more than 200 bruises and wounds were discovered from Baran at that time.

Baran wasn’t able to call for help or escape the cruelty because the house was always double-locked.

Baran started working for Analiza and Reynold Marzan at their house along Visayas Avenue, Quezon City in 2007.

She said her first year with the Marzans went smoothly but noted she was only earning 700 pesos a month. Her salary was later increased to 800 pesos a month. It was during her second year that Analiza allegedly started beating her every day for being inefficient.
"Iyung unang taon, 'di ako sinasaktan, 'yung unang naranasan ko yung sinasaktan ako halos araw-araw, paulit-ulit," she told on an interview.
"Kung may nakita siya na hindi maganda, kapag hindi malinis, sinasaktan niya po ako." she addded.

Her punishments included allegedly being hit repeatedly with reed broom (walis tambo), figurines or any hard object Analiza got hold of.

She was also reportedly scorched with a flat iron in the face, force-fed with cockroaches and spoiled food, choked and stabbed with scissors in the arm.

"Pag nasugatan na niya ako, sasabihin niya 'sorry.' Hindi daw niya sinasadya," she said.

"Ang sabi niya sa akin, bakit ang tagal-tagal ko daw mamatay," she added.

She noted that Analiza's three children were also witnesses to the alleged beatings.
Bonita said she started losing her sight last year when Analiza allegedly kept punching her eyes almost everyday.

She said there was a time that Analiza allegedly punched her so hard that blood gushed through her eyes.

"Sinusuntok niya ako, tapos ilang araw na parang namamaga siya binuhusan ako ng isang tabong tubig," she said.

Erfe said a medico-legal report showed that Bonita sustained at least 200 scars, mostly from burn injuries.

Baran was sent back to her province by her employers because she was "not useful" anymore after she lost her eyesight from constant beating. She said her employers made her wear a diaper so she would not have a hard time finding a comfort room during her trip. She was escorted by her employers at a bus station, with a TV set as a gift, on her way home to Virac, Catanduanes in 2012. But she was already blind. It was only then that Baran was able to tell the police, and the PAO handled the case.

Baran’s employers offered her Php500,000 compensation, and said they will plead guilty to a lesser offense. Bonita Baran declined the offer and said “No amount of money will be enough to compensate for my blindness. I want justice. I will never agree to a settlement.”

The accused were ordered to pay Baran moral damages of P50,000 and exemplary damages of P50,000.

Baylon said it could not award damages to Baran for the loss of her sight, saying the proper forum for that would be the other court handling a separate serious physical injury case she lodged against her former employers.
The Marzans are facing charges of serious illegal detention for allegedly locking up Baran in their home at Las Villas del Cielo on Visayas Avenue from 2009 to 2012. During that time, the maid says she was subjected repeatedly to physical abuse until she became blind.

The couple have also been charged with seven counts of serious physical injury and two counts of attempted homicide in another court.

The Senate ordered the couple's  arrest for inflicting serious physical injuries on their former house help.
