The Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) by the Japanese government has funded at least 500 projects in the Philippines already since its launching in 1989 with objectives to assist the marginalized sector and reach out to various communities engaged in grassroots activities.
Japan is the largest Official Development Assistance (ODA) donor in Asia and the top donor for the Philippines with a net ODA of US$250,247 worth of grant in 2016 that provided 15 Mindanao Municipalities with 2 Fire Trucks, 14 Ambulance Vehicles and a Rescue Vehicle.
Solid Partnership – The Japanese government have once again extended their arms wide open as they decided to ‘provide an additional 22 Emergency Vehicles to the Philippines’ apart from the other 54 already turned over to Visayas and Mindanao earlier.
The grant contract signing of “The Project for Providing Emergency Vehicles to 20 Local Government Units in Luzon” was attended by Japanese Ambassador Koji Haneda on March 23, 2018 with a simultaneous turnover of 17 different units to Mindanao including Davao City.
With the vehicles initially turned over and the recent contract signing, Japan delivered a total of 76 Emergency Vehicles already as donation to the Philippines equivalent to US$ 998,357.
Brought about by the agreement stipulated in the fourth and latest project, the partnership between the Embassy of Japan and the Bureau of Fire Protection have already stretched the expanse of Luzon province after Visayas already obtained its share of at least 37 units during the first two projects between 2014-2015.
The Embassy of Japan hopes to assist the BFP in addressing the shortage of Emergency Vehicles at its Fire Stations so that it shall deliver its mandate at an optimum level of performance.
In a statement, the Japanese Embassy said: “Through these projects, the BFP will be able to improve its emergency services response thus complementing the efforts being made by Japan in improving disaster risk reduction and management in the Philippines,”
President Rodrigo Duterte along with DILG Secretary Eduardo Año and BFP Chief Leonard Bañago, attended the March 23 ceremony spearheaded by the Bureau of Fire Protection with attendance from different Mayors of recipient local government units with approximately 200 fire fighters also around.
The project is expected to benefit around 6 Million people in Mindanao and another 3 Million in Luzon.
