ACTS OFW party-list Representative John Bertiz III on Thursday defended President Rodrigo Duterte from Magdalo party-list Representative Gary Alejano's claim that the chief executive's recent visit to Hong Kong was a wasteful junket.
Bertiz called Alejano a “publicity seeker” and a “whiner” who was only “trying to draw attention” to himself.
“We cannot avoid grandstanding nitpickers who always try to find fault, however petty, everywhere they look,” Bertiz said.
In a media forum, Bertiz said Duterte went to Hong Kong to visit the Filipino migrant workers there who, he said, work hard to remit big money to the Philippines.
"For the good information of our colleagues in the government, ang Hong Kong, US$830 million ang nire-remit niyan every year, which is total of P43 million, part ng budget ng ating gobyerno," he said.
"At ang almost 290,000 OFWs sa Hong Kong ay matagal nang hinihintay na makita nila ang ating mahal na Presidente dahil alam nila na ang pamahalaan na ito ay may puso at malasakit," Bertiz added.
Alejano, a critic of the administration, said Duterte's visit to Hong Kong last week achieved nothing.
"Aside from giving a speech to about 2,000 mostly Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong and supposedly dining in a fastfood chain, all for PR purposes, what has his so-called ‘working visit’ achieved for the benefit of our country and people? Nothing!" he said.
But for Bertiz, Duterte's visit aims to show compassion to the OFWs who work abroad to support their families.
"Ito, pagpapakita ng malasakit at tapang ng ating mahal na Pangulo dahil lalo na nung nag-impose siya ng ban sa Kuwait, e hindi niya man lang iniisip yung mga diplomatic relationships natin," he said.
"Ang inisip ng Presidente ay kung paano niya mapapangalagaan ang mga mamamayan which hindi natin naramdaman yan kahit nung mga nakaraang administrasyon," he added.
Bertiz added that Duterte's trip to Hong Kong was not a publicity stunt.
"Hindi na kailangan ng media stunt ng ating mahal na Presidente kasi maihahalintulad 'yan sa isang rock tar na umiiyak ang bawat OFW sa pinupuntahan niyang bansa," he said.
"Yan ang tinatawag na great leader. Tapos sasabihin niyo junket 'yung pagpunta or media mileage lang? Hindi kailangan ng Presidente 'yan," he added.
Duterte went to Hong Kong last week after attending the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference in Hainan, China. He returned to the country last Friday early morning.
