“Tunay kang statesman!” Lito Atienza praises Pres. Duterte: The kind of leadership that we Filipinos deserve

Former Manila Mayor and now BUHAY party-list representative Lito Atienza praised President Rodrigo Duterte after the latter apologized to Hong Kong for what happened during the Manila Hostage Crisis in 2010.

In his lengthy post, Atienza said that he was now convinced that Duterte was a real “strongman” and “statesman” for apologizing for what happened in 2010 even he’s not the President at that time.

According to the lawmaker, Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Hong Kong were badly treated after the hostage crisis.

He believed that President Duterte’s action was a good example of leadership.

Read his post below:

HINAHANGAAN KO AT NG SAMBAYANANG PILIPINO ANG ATING PANGULO. PINAKITA NIYA ANG PINAKAMATAAS NA ANTAS NG PAGIGING ISANG TUNAY NA STATESMAN. ISANG STRONGMAN LEADER NA GALIT SA MGA KRIMINAL, MABAIT AT MAASIKASO SA MGA MAMAMAYAN, AT KAYANG HUMINGI NG PAUMANHIN KAPAG KAILANGAN. MABUHAY KA PANGULONG RODRIGO DUTERTE!
We laud President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision to apologize for the bloody hostage taking incident on August 23, 2010, which resulted in the deaths of eight (8) Hongkong nationals.
This shows statesmanship of the highest calibre.
Our brother and sister Filipinos living and working in Hongkong have suffered for eight years because of the lingering effects of this festering sore in Manila-Hongkong relations – something which could have easily been averted if only the national and local leadership in Manila at that time focused on admitting their fault in the mismanaged and botched rescue operations which resulted in eight deaths.
It takes much more than arrogant leadership to deal with the effects of such a high-profile incident which unfolded before world media.
Eight years after it happened, the Hongkong community witnessed firsthand the practical and sensitive leadership of someone like President Duterte – who apologized in behalf of the Philippine government. As witnessed by thousands of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), everyone present was shedding tears.
This is a good example of the kind of leadership that we Filipinos deserve.

On April 12, President Rodrigo Duterte addressed himself to the Chinese people during his speech in Hong Kong and apologized for what happened in 2010.

“May I address myself to the Chinese people who are here. From the bottom of my heart, as the President of the Republic of the Philippines and in behalf of the people of the Philippines, may I apologize formally for you now,” Duterte said.

“We are sorry that the incident happened and as humanely possible, I would like to make this guarantee also that it will never, never happen again,” he added.

The Hostage crisis resulted to a rift between the relations of Hong Kong and Philippines.

Hostage taker Rolando Mendoza and eight Chinese hostages were killed during the incident.

Former President Benigno Aquino III didn’t officially apologize for what happened.
