Just In: Risa Hontiveros Ininsulto ang Probinsya ng Bacolod sa Pagpunta niya Dahil Wala Daw siyang Nakikitang Malalaking Bahay!

Senator Risa Hontiveros just visited the province of Negros Occidental for the first time and unwittingly insulted the “City of Smiles”, almost immediately after landing at Bacolod-Silay International Airport.

On Tuesday, Hontiveros visited Bacolod City to attend the early combined Christmas Party of Gabriela-Negros and Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), at the Bacolod Arts and Youth Center (BAY Center).

The self-confessed “activist since six years old” was the guest speaker of the province’s biggest gathering of militants this year.

While on board the Toyota HiAce van that fetched her from the airport, Hontiveros said “akala ko a ang kwarta sa Negros gina piko at gina pala, bakit wala ata tayong nadadaanang malalaking bahay?

(I thought money in Negros is being picked and shoveled so why I did not see big houses?)

“Gina piko kag gina pala” is an idiom in Negros and needed not to be considered seriously, but the lady senator used it in a wrong way, making the locals who fetched her at the airport felt insulted.

The Bacolod-Silay International Airport is located 5 kilometers away from Silay City proper and build inside the former sugarcane field. The vehicle that carried Hontiveros used the new Bacolod-Silay access road and it is only normal that there is no “big house” there because the road is build inside the vast sugarcane plantation.

Looking for a big house is none of any senator’s business, especially when one is attending the party organized by allegedly poor group.

It may be a joke for Hontiveros, but people who understand its meaning will definitely get insulted.

Bacolod City, the “City of Smiles” always ranked as one of the country’s best cities to live, and complaining not seeing a big house is actually an ignorant comment.
